7. Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most - Bette Midler

This song, originally recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and subsequently covered by several artists, reminds us that spring isn't always a happy time for everyone and that new beginnings can also be tough. Still, the lyrics are sprinkled with some beautiful spring imagery in between the loneliness and melancholy.

"Morning's kiss wakes trees and flowers,
And to them I'd like to drink a toast,
I walk in the park just to kill lonely hours,
Spring can really hang you up the most."

6. A New Day - Celine Dion

Celine's soaring voice reminds us that spring is a time for starting over, for putting the sadness and heartache behind us and for looking ahead to a new day with new possibilities.

"Let the rain come down
And wash away my tears
Let it fill my soul
And drown my fears
Let it shatter the walls
For a new sun
A new day has come"

5. Spring Affair - Donna Summer

Nothing says spring like a little feel-good d-i-s-c-o and this Donna Summer hit makes you want to put on your dancing platforms and celebrate the start of "something new", and perhaps even a new love affair, under a giant mirror ball. Or maybe it's just me.

"Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And I'm hung on you
Spring affair, spring affair, spring affair
And we've got something new, me and you, oh baby"

4. New Beginning - Tracy Chapman

This song is also tainted by a little darkness, with references to a world broken into pieces, but the underlying message is a positive one, namely that we can commit to a new beginning, which is precisely what spring offers.

"It's time to start all over, make a new beginning
There's too much pain, too much suffering
Let's resolve to start all over make a new beginning"

3. I Dream of Spring - k.d. Lang

kd mentions how thoughts of spring offer the promise of salvation from the "cold, dark places" in which she finds herself. The warmth of spring can help inject some vitality to help those who have gone through periods of darkness, helping them to rejuvenate.

"These cold dark places
Places I've been
In cold dark places
I dream of spring"

2. Beauty in the World – Macy Gray

This is one of my favourite forget-your-problems, life-is-good songs. Spring is often a reminder of all the beauty that exists in the world – you just have to take a moment to notice it. Stop and smell the roses - literally. And then "shake your booty boys and girls for the beauty in the world".

"Notice the blue skies
Notice the butterflies
Notice me
Stop and smell the flowers
And lose it the sweet music and dance with me
There is beauty in the world"

1. Life is a Flower - Ace of Base

Trust the Swedes to produce some awesome uplifting pop to put a little spring in your step (pun intended). This song is all about the preciousness of life so it is important to maintain a positive outlook. Keep this song in your mind as you look around you and appreciate the burst of colour and activity that the arrival of spring produce and I guarantee you won't be able to resist a smile (even if it is only on the inside).

"Carry on smiling
And the world will smile with you
Life is a flower
So precious in your hand
Carry on smiling
And the world will smile with you"
