7 Songs for Halloween

A Spooktacular Halloween Playlist

Halloween was my favourite holiday-but-not-really-a-holiday when I lived in the US. I loved how everyone got into the Halloween spirit (pun unintended) - the spooky decorations in homes and stores, the elaborate costumes, the "killer" Halloween parties, the abundance of scary movies on television and the ridiculously cheap candy. My costumes included Adam Lambert (complete with heavy eye make-up and bad glam rocker wig), a garden gnome (with long beard, boots and the pointiest gnome hat ever) and hands down the scariest one: Yolandi Vi$$er from Die Antwoord (inspired by their Rich Bitch video). Since my return I have found ways to continue to enjoy Halloween albeit on a smaller scale. One such way is with a spooktacular Halloween playlist.

7. Zombie - The Cranberries

Zombie remains one of the quintessential 90s hits. Dolores O'Riordan's striking vocals together with a heavy head-banging friendly baseline make it the ideal song to get any Halloween party started on the right note. What's in your heeeeead? This song for the rest of the night!

6. Gods and Monsters - Lana Del Rey

It was actually Jessica Lange's mesmerising cover of this song on American Horror Story: Freakshow that made me fall in love with it, and whenever I hear it I picture Elsa Mars performing the song while the evil two-faced Edward Mordrake sweeps through the freakshow to choose someone to join him in the afterlife. The original version is equally haunting and provides the perfect atmosphere for your Halloween festivities.

5. Evil in the Night - Adam Lambert

"Danger by day but you're evil in the night". This is a fairly unknown track from glam rocker Adam Lambert, taken from The Original High. Powerful vocals (as always), a solid dance beat, and the suggestion of something sinister emerging after the sun goes down make for an awesome Halloween track.

4. Bad Things - Chace Everett

Everett's distinct Southern twang and some spooky guitar work, together with the fact that it was the theme song for the fabulous HBO series True Blood, contribute to the appropriateness of Bad Things as an essential track for any Halloween playlist. Go on, channel your inner Eric or Pam.

3. Dark Lady - Cher

A fortune teller, black magic, brew and murder - perfect ingredients for a deliciously dark song, which remains one of my favourite Cher hits.

2. Teeth - Lady Gaga

When a song starts with "Don't be scared / I've done this before / Show me your teeth" you know it's going to be a little freakier than your typical pop song. Teeth appears on The Fame Monster and I'm surprised that it did not make it onto an episode of True Blood or The Vampire Diaries with its references to fangs.. It is a super catchy song that will have you dancing like you are possessed.

1. Thriller - Michael Jackson

A bit of a cliché perhaps but it's difficult to find a Halloween-themed song to top this MJ classic, especially with the accompanying video in mind. As soon as you hear those opening chords, you are ready to do the Thriller dance (just admit it) while the opening lyrics "it's close to midnight / and something evil's lurking from the dark" set the creepy mood for this thrilling Halloween anthem.
