Mooirivier

Liefde wen, altyd

Starring:  Tim Theron, Anel Alexander, Heinz Winckler, Nadia Beukes, Milan Murray, Hykie Berg, Leandie Du Randt, Danie Putter
Year:  2015
Running Time:  105 minutes

At the start of the film, the narrator asks: "Wat is die punt van liefde?" (What is the point of love?), a question which is explored through five interconnected love stories that include classic (bordering on cliched) concepts such as star-crossed lovers, Cinderella stories, reconciliation and sweeping romantic gestures.

Ian (Danie Putter) and Janine (Leandie Du Randt)
Ian is a "commitment-phobe" and what some might call a player.  His friend, Janine, however falls in love too easily.  After a break-up with her latest boyfriend, Marius (following Janine's attempt to express her feelings by covering his car with "I love you" post-its), she turns to Ian for comfort.  Together they come up with a list of things for Janine to do to get over Marius.  The last item on the list is "make out with someone else" but, to Janine's disappointment, Ian does not seem to be interested in being her rebound guy.  He then realises his mistake and serenades her with the help of two quirky friends, Spys and Arnoldus.

Amelia (Milan Murray) and Stefan (Hykie Berg)
A couple that seemed to have it all until Stefan had an affair with one of his son's teachers, Elsje, which Stefan regrets.  He is trying to put his family back together but Amelia does not make it easy for him.  Instead, she attempts to explore her "wild side" with a hot blue-eyed blonde she meets at a bar but alas, she can't go through with it and realises she still has feelings for Stefan.

Paul (Tim Theron) and Lisa (Anel Alexander)
Paul is an estate agent, a former reverend and a hot widower that has the hearts of all the single ladies in town aflutter.  Lisa (Amelia's sister) has just returned from Paris after a failed relationship and some visa issues.  She is rather cynical when it comes to men, describing them as tonsils - it hurts when they are removed but then afterwards you realise you never really needed them anyway.  She is looking for a house and Paul is her agent.  Of course, there is a spark between them but Paul has some unresolved feelings related to his deceased wife to deal with first.  In a particularly funny reversed Pretty Woman scene of sorts, Lisa helps Paul with a new wardrobe - a scene that is even more appealing when he emerges from the fitting room sans pants!

Marcelle (Nadia Beukes) and Dave (Heinz Winckler)
Marcelle is a struggling single mom and Dave is a famous (and hot) singer with a reputation as a playboy.  Their paths cross when Marcelle is dressed in an Easter bunny costume as part of a promotion and then again when she spills wine on Dave at a function at the hotel where she works.  Dave is described as "a charmer, a womaniser, a flirt" but he is also looking for something - someone - different.   But are their worlds just too different for it to work?

The plot culminates at the local Easter concert with music from Dave and the former reverend's message of love against a backdrop of lights and hearts.  Cliches aside, there are some touching moments and superb acting from the star-studded cast.  I especially enjoyed the comic relief from all the heavy romantic subplots, in the form of the pranks between Spys and Arnoldus as well as the always-hilarious Anne Hirsch, which I needed more of.  As the film's blurb says, "Mooirivier sal jou weer laat glo in die lewe, en glo dat liefde, bowenal, altyd wen."
