7 (More) Songs for Women's Day

Inspired by Women's Day, which is celebrated on 9 August in South Africa, I previously shared seven of my favourite songs that salute women and their indelible impact on society.  Below are seven songs that are perfect additions to that playlist.

7.  Womankind - Annie Lennox
A track from the Songs of Mass Destruction album that deals with change and possibility, with an overall message of womankind taking control of their lives.  Check out the Fannelli True Diva Remix of the song:

6.  Cool Girl - Tove Lo
It doesn't get cooler than this.  This catchy pop song was the first single from Tove Lo's tongue-in-cheek titled album Lady Wood.  It paints the picture of a woman who is in complete control, speaking her truth and unfazed by anything or anyone:  "Ice cold, I roll my eyes at you boy".

5.  Hymn To Her - The Pretenders
This is a moving song from Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders, honouring the many roles of women throughout their lifetime and the lasting impact they have on the world: "They will keep on speaking her name".  Music critic for Spin magazine, Brian Cullman, described the song as a "hymn to the eternal feminine".

4.  Just Because I'm A Woman - Dolly Parton
Dolly has always been a fierce and independent woman who is not afraid to tell it like is in a way that only she can.  This song, released in 1968, makes a bold statement about gender equality and the expression of sexuality by a woman.  She addresses a hypocritical male (allegedly her husband): "Listen, and understand, my mistakes are no worse that yours just because I'm a woman".  Watch Dolly (with big hair and not-so-big boobs) perform the song live:

3.  She's Not Just A Pretty Face - Shania Twain
Another feminist-themed song from Shania in which she mentions several examples of professions in which women are thriving, affirming that women are not "less than" their male counterparts when it comes to achieving success in jobs that are traditionally dominated by men: astronaut, farmer, coach, geologist, soldier, surgeon and many more.  However, she also states that the more traditional roles of women are equally important and empowering.

2.  I Am Woman - Cynthia Nixon, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis
While Sex and the City 2 might not have been the best film, it was great to have the fabulous NYC foursome back on the big screen for another crazy adventure.  One of the best scenes is one in which they take to the stage for a karaoke performance of I Am Woman, originally recorded by Aussie singer Helen Reddy back in 1971.  According to Reddy, the song is "not just for women...It's a general empowerment song about feeling good about yourself, believing in yourself". The song challenges the idea that women are the weaker sex by insisting that they are "strong" and "invincible".

1.  Woman - Kesha

Kesha is BACK in 2017 and has got fans and critics alike buzzing about her first two singles, Woman and Praying.  Kesha does not hold back in the former track, a powerful anthem in which she asserts that she's a "motherfucking woman" who does what she wants, says what she says and works "real hard every day".  Check out a gold-clad 70s-inspired Kesha in the official music video:
