7 Satisfying Sweet Treats

I don't have many vices but I do have a sweet tooth.  I'm the kind of person who would rather have a smaller main course at a restaurant or function (or skip it altogether) and indulge in whatever desserts are on offer.  My kryptonite is anything that contains caramel in any form - I have been known to salivate at the mere mention of the word, and, as such, was a big fan of the salted caramel trend which still seems to be going strong.  I have compiled a list of 7 of my current favourite sweet treats - you're welcome.

Assortment of Coconut Squares - Woolworths
These heavenly handcrafted cubes of coconut ice are made with freeze dried raspberries and Madagascan vanilla pod seeds and the assortment features four flavours:  rose, litchi and raspberry, lemon and vanilla, strawberry and vanilla and pomegranate and vanilla.  The best thing about the coconut squares, besides the refreshing flavours, is that, unlike some coconut ice I've had, there are no discernible sugar granules that make them sickeningly sweet.

Speculoos Crunchy Cookie Spread - Red Bicycle

For those who are unfamiliar with the deliciousness that is speculoos, Wikipedia describes it as a "type of spiced shortcrust biscuit, traditionally baked for consumption on or just before St Nicholas' day in the Netherlands (5 December), Belgium (6 December), and around Christmas in Germany".  The biscuits are thin and caramelized and delectable!  This particular spread containing crunchy chunks of speculoos was a birthday gift from a good friend. It is perfect to dollop on warm waffles.

Blonde Caramel - The Nataniël Collection

The packaging reads: "Delicious straight out of the jar (spoon optional) but can also be served with fresh fruit or ice-cream, as a crêpe filling or as a cake topping".  This is by far the best store-bought caramel I have ever tasted, available from Checkers stores, along with a range of other great Nataniël products.

Mini Caramel Swiss Rolls - Woolworths
I cannot fathom why anyone would want to ruin a perfectly good Swiss roll by putting jam in it - apricot jam no less!  Woolworths Swiss rolls contain just the right amount of butter cream icing and caramel filling (no jam in sight) and it takes every ounce of self-restraint not to have more than one at a time.

Chocolate Blondies - Brownies & Downies

This café , located on Long Street in Cape Town,  trains adults with special needs "to be employable in the hospitality, service and retail sectors"  by employing these young adults in the café . Their white chocolate blonde brownies are on the pricey side, given their moderate size, however these melt-in-your-mouth treats are worth every cent.

Milktart Cupcakes - The Velvet Cake Company

What could be better than a moist, cinnamon-infused cupcake with a milktart filling?  Definitely my favourite cupcake from the many mouth-watering ones on offer at the Velvet Cake Company.

Chocolate Bunny Chow - Honest Chocolate

When I saw this on the menu I knew I had to try it.  It is Honest Chocolate's take on the traditional South African bunny chow, which is savoury.  Here, a mini banana bread is hollowed out and filled with a dark chocolate spread and creamy ice-cream.  So decadent and so worth it!
