It’s the moment you’ve all been eagerly waiting for– the
moment I reveal my top 10 songs of the year.
As expected, the list is unapologetically dominated by pop music and damn, what a year it was for pop. So sit back and enjoy the songs that made me
smile, sing, dance and most importantly, feel fucking great this past year!
10. We Could Be Divine – Kahn and Karen
This was an unexpected collaboration by the charming
Parlotones frontman, Kahn Morbee, and rock queen Karen Zoid but boy did they
create magic. I was privileged to see
the two of them perform the song live at the Artscape and it
was…well…divine. The music video is also
fantastic.
9. It Ain’t Me – Kygo
feat. Selena Gomez
I am a sucker when it comes to Selee-ner and this collaboration
between her and Norwegian producer and DJ, Kygo, is a firm favourite of mine
from this year. The song’s Wikipedia
page describes it as “a dance-pop, electropop and tropical
house song” with an “acoustic
guitar line, and a build-drop arrangement…featuring pulsing
piano notes, bass, synthesizers, finger-snap claps and pan flute melodies”. What more could you ask for?
8. What About Us? –
P!nk
P!nk’s highly-anticipated album, Beautiful Trauma, was
released late this year and What About Us? was the first single. P!nk’s music hits the spot and this song, as
well as the official remixes, is no exception. It is filled with thought-provoking rhetorical
questions and an awesome dance beat. The album is also one of my favourites of the year.
7. Thunder – Imagine
Dragons
When I hear this song, I can’t help but move my whole body –
I particularly enjoy the “clap clap clap” after the “thunder…feel the thunder”
part. The video is also wonderfully
bizarre.
6. Two Fux – Adam
Lambert
There were many times in the past year when I had only two
fux to give and then this song came along and it became a theme song, to be
played at maximum volume (and often in my head throughout the day).
5. Disconnect – Clean
Bandit feat. Marina and the Diamonds
Another song that became an anthem for me. I listened to it repeatedly on the drive to
work in the mornings or at the end of a challenging day. The lyrics spoke directly to my body and soul:
Need to look after myself
Yeah I need to take a breath
Need to look after my health
Yeah I need to disconnect
Yeah I need to take a breath
Need to look after my health
Yeah I need to disconnect
4. The Cure – Lady Gaga
This was a surprise release from Lady Gaga that had everyone
talking. It did much better than her
recent releases (although I LOVED Joanne and paid little attention to the mixed
reviews of the album) and reminded sceptics and critics what Gaga is all about.
3. Malibu / Younger
Now – Miley Cyrus
I couldn’t choose between these two singles from Miley’s
Younger Now album – so I decided, since it is my list and I can do what I want,
to include both of them. Despite a
lukewarm reception of the album, I couldn’t get enough Miley and her rhinestone
jumpsuits in 2017.
2. Cut To The Feeling
– Carly Rae Jepsen
Carly just keeps turning out tracks that are catchy AF. I was obsessed with this song (taken from the
soundtrack to the Canadian film Ballerina – or Leap in the US) from the first
time I heard it. A catchy beat gets the
song started before a dance-tastic chorus drops:
Ah, I
wanna cut through the clouds, break the ceiling
I wanna dance on the roof, you and me alone
I wanna cut to the feeling, oh yeah
I wanna dance on the roof, you and me alone
I wanna cut to the feeling, oh yeah
1. Scared Of The Dark
– Steps
One of the highlights on the music scene of 2017 was the
return of Steps. And what a
comeback! Scared Of The Dark is pure pop
and dance perfection and set the tone for an equally perfect album, Tears On The
Dancefloor. The video also reminds us
why we fell in love with Steps back in the 90s.
