Five Favorite Things...Right Now

Cupcakes from Baked by Melissa
I finally got around to getting myself a pack of six cupcakes from this famous bakery - and they happened to be Pride themed with rainbow-coloured frosting on chocolate and vanilla cupcakes.  These bite-sized treats are definitely worth splurge and come in a large variety of equally appealing flavours, including:  chocolate chip pancake, mint cookie, graham cracker, marshmallow, triple chocolate fudge, red velvet and cookie dough.  From 1 June until 31 December, they are also selling a Sesame Street collection (with unique flavours named after Abby Cadabby, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Elmo and Oscar the Grouch) in honour of the franchise's 50th anniversary.

Big Little Lies 2
The introduction of Meryl Streep as Perry's mother, Mary Louise, who has moved to the town of Monterey to find answers about her son's death, justified the continuation of the series beyond the book on which it's based.  She brought the drama from the very first episode of the season with that scream that only she could pull off.  Laura Dern has also had some of the best lines this season ("I will not not be rich", "Will somebody give a woman a moment?") and will undoubtedly get an Emmy nomination for her role as Renata.   The intense courtroom scenes with Meryl and Nicole were also standout moments for the season.

Stranger Things 3
What wasn't to love about the third season of Stranger Things (which I preferred to the second)...two Madonna songs in back-to-back episodes, including El's makeover montage set to Material Girl, Dustin and Suzie's Neverending Story duet, Scoops Ahoy, Steve at the pool, Lucas' sassy little sister, Steve and Robin's friendship, evil Russians and a perpetually panic-stricken Winona Ryder.  It's easy to see why the show broke in-house records with viewership numbers exceeded 40 million within one week of its debut on Netflix.

Blueeyedboy by Joanne Harris
I am an avid Joanne Harris fan.  Her stories are typically filled with twists and turns and unexpected revelations and Blueyedboy is no exception.  It is a psychological thriller set in cyberspace, specifically the fictional online journal badguysrock@webjournal.com, which serves as an outlet for the deep and often dark desires of those who post on the site.  When a novel opens with the line "The colour of murder is blue..." you know it's going to be a page-turner.

By The Way, I Forgive You by Brandi Carlile
The stunning sixth album from Brandi Carlile won the Grammy for Best Americana Album this year and after one listen it's easy to see why.  My favourite tracks are Every Time I Hear That Song, The Mother, Sugartooth and the lead single, The Joke.  Brandi said the following about the latter: "There are so many people feeling misrepresented [today]...so many people feeling unloved. Boys feeling marginalized and forced into these kind of awkward shapes of masculinity that they do or don't belong in... so many men and boys are trans or disabled or shy. Little girls who got so excited for the last election, and are dealing with the fallout. The song is just for people that feel under-represented, unloved or illegal."
