Natasha Bedingfield: Roll With Me Tour

Natasha comes to New York

With its poptastic hit singles These Words and Unwritten, Natasha Bedingfield's debut album, Unwritten, was one of my favourite albums in 2004 .  She kind of lost me with her second album, N.B., largely because of the awful I Wanna Have Your Babies (I still shudder when I think of the lines "I wanna have your babies / I see 'em springing up like daisies / This one, this another, this one, oow... / Babies, babies, babies, babies..." But she redeemed herself with Pocketful of Sunshine, a song about escapism which Bedingfield has singled out as her favourite.

With her latest album, Roll With Me (produced by the legendary Linda Perry), Natasha Bedingfield has ended her 9 year hiatus from recording.  She told Vents Magazine: "I wanted to make music that moves people and makes them move, bright and bold but in a way that is also raw and honest".   The album is a new direction for Natasha but her vocal prowess and versatility are very much apparent and she has certainly achieved her goal of making a "bright and bold" record.

She recently performed at the intimate Webster Hall in the East Village to promote her new album but of course she also performed the songs that brought her success 15 years ago (yikes!).  She took to the stage in an asymmetrical black dress (bangs on point) and wowed the audience with her powerful (at times a little too powerful) voice and energetic stage presence.  Indeed, pop Natasha seemed to take a backseat to make way for edgy rock Natasha.  If I had to criticise anything (aside from the obnoxious millennials who were more interested in their inane conversations than the music) it would be the lighting - at times the excessive stage lights made it hard to see her clearly.  But it was an entertaining show and I was thrilled to hear my favourite Natasha songs as well as her amazing covers of Coldplay's The Scientist and her brother Daniel's huge hit, Gotta Get Thru This.
