We are living in trying times and anxiety levels are increasing every day with no apparent end in sight. For those who already suffer from anxiety and depression, the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty can be crippling. As much as social distancing and impeccable hygiene practices are vital in curbing the spread of the virus, it is equally important to take care of one's mental and emotional well-being, especially considering the fact that so many people are isolated from their loved ones. I found a quote on Pinterest about the impact of music on mental and physical health: Listening 5 to 10 songs a day can improve memory, strengthen the immune system and reduce depression risk by 80%. I always question the accuracy of these random quotes but in this case, I'd like to believe it's true.
So I have compiled a list of 10 songs to lift your spirits, to keep the dark thoughts at bay and, if the aforementioned quote is to be believed, to boost your immune system. Turn up the volume and sing along with conviction.
Bang My Head - David Guetta feat. Sia
Sia's voice soars on this collaboration with David Guetta as she encourages us not to give up despite feeling overwhelmed.
When you think you're giving up, just know
You might think you're dying but you won't
And you feel the life stepping out of you
But when you think of giving up, don't
Keep On - Blackbyrd
A really catchy song from South African group, Blackbyrd, telling us to keep on keeping on because sometimes that's all you can do until things get better.
Keep on
Keep believing
Keep on fighting
Keep holding on
Someday you will find it
So don't look behind you
Just carry on
Beauty In The World - Macy Gray
This remains one of my favourite Macy Gray songs because it reminds me that there is beauty in the chaos - if we take the time to notice.
What's been messed up for us?
When I look around I see blue skies
I see butterflies for us
Listen to the sound and lose it
It's sweet music and dance with me
There is beauty in the world
So much beauty in the world
Always beauty in the world
Better Than Today - Kylie Minogue
You can always rely on Kylie to get you to "let go and dance" when your emotions are weighing you down. This song is all about having fun, which we could all use more of right now, because "tomorrow will be better than today".
You've got to feel it, see it, know how much you need it
What's the point in living if you don't take a chance?
You've got to use it, lose it, know the chance to do it
What's the point in living if you don't wanna dance?
Carry On - fun.
A great song that champions perseverance in the face of adversity.
If you're lost and alone
Or you're sinking like a stone
Carry on
May your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground
Carry on
Storm - SuRie
An anthem of a song which featured on my top ten list of songs from 2018. The chorus reminds us of the ephemeral nature of the storms we face.
Storms don't last forever, forever, remember
We can hold our hands together
Through this storm, through this storm
Warriors - Aaliyah Rose
The theme song from the She-Ra reboot on Netflix with a message of unity against a common enemy.
We're on the edge of greatness
Turning darkness to light
We're right beside you
Ready to fight!
Shine Like The Sun - Dolly Parton
How can you not feel better after listening to Dolly Parton? Her positivity is positively inspiring.
I've been down on my luck,
I've been shadowed with trouble and sorrow
But I ain't givin' up
'Cause I know there is always tomorrow
There are no guarantees,
Life is always a hit or a miss
But I truly believe
I won't always be feeling like this
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
I had to include this song on the list, especially after seeing the video of her singing it while washing her hands. Although the song is about overcoming a breakup, it can also apply to almost anything that life throws your way.
Oh no not I, I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
And I've got all my love to give and I'll survive
I will survive, hey, hey
Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac
Finally, a classic hit about looking ahead to better days.
Don't stop thinking about tomorrow
Don't stop, it'll soon be here
It'll be here, better than before
Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone
