The Women of SATC

As I watched reruns of the hit HBO show following the lives and relationships of a group of four women in New York City that aired from 1998 to 2004, I couldn’t help but wonder…whatever happened to the show’s four stars?

Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw)

Before the series came to an end, SJP won two Emmys, four Golden Globes and three Screen Actors Guild Awards for her iconic role.  She didn’t have any television roles until 2012 when she starred in three episodes of Glee. Her character, Isabelle Wright, was an executive at Vogue.com and Kurt’s mentor.  She then starred in the series Divorce from 2016 to 2019 which earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

In terms of film roles following SATC, she starred in The Family Stone (2005), Failure to Launch (2006), Sex and the City (2008), Sex and the City 2 (2010), New Year’s Eve (2011) and Escape From Planet Earth (2013).

SJP also returned to the Broadway stage in February this year – before COVID shut down the par-tay.  She and her husband, Matthew Broderick, starred in Plaza Suite for two weeks in Boston and were due to start previews in March.  I was hoping to see the play so I was glad to hear that the revival will debut in March 2021 and will continue to run though July 2021.

Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes)

Cynthia Nixon won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as the feisty and somewhat cynical lawyer (with questionable taste in fashion and hairstyles in the earlier episodes), Miranda.  She is just an Oscar away from the coveted EGOT title, having a Tony for Best Actress in a Play for Rabbit Hole and another Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play for The Little Foxes as well a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for An Inconvenient Truth.

Besides the SATC films, she starred in Stockholm, Pennsylvania and James White, both of which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015.  She also played the leading role of Emily Dickinson in A Quiet Passion, a biography about the poet’s life.

In 2018 she was in the political spotlight after announcing that she was running for Governor of New York.  Although she lost the election to Democratic incumbent, the dashing Andrew Cuomo, I think 34% of the vote is a pretty respectable result for someone with limited experience in the political arena (although she had campaigned for Bill De Blasio and more recently Bernie Sanders).

Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones)

Probably my favourite character: a confident and assertive woman, often regarded as a role model for sex positivity, who worked her way up from a working class background to become one of New York’s hottest PR specialists.  The role earned Cattrall five Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.  She has appeared in several television shows since SATC, often playing herself.  One of the most critically acclaimed roles was that of Davina Jackson in the HBO Canada series, Sensitive Skin from 2014 to 2016.

She has not had any notable big screen roles but has starred in several B-grade sounding films besides the two SATC movies, including: Ice Princess (2005), The Tiger’s Tail (2006), The Ghost Writer (2010), Meet Monica Velour (2010) and Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans (2019).

Kristin Davis (Charlotte York)

Although Charlotte, a preppy but super chic idealist from a wealthy Connecticut family, wasn’t my favourite character she did have some pretty hilarious plots and lines. Davis received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her role but didn’t win any.

She made her Broadway debut in The Best Man in 2012 and followed this role with a West End debut in the stage production of Fatal Attraction in which she played Beth Gallagher, the wife of the cheating husband.  When it comes to film roles, like Kim Cattrall, she hasn’t appeared in any box office hits except perhaps Couples Retreat (2009) which opened at number 1 at the US box office and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012) which made more than $100 million.  Other film credits include:  The Shaggy Dog (2006), Deck the Halls (2006) and Holiday in the Wild (2019).
