The year is 1987. 16-year-old Tiffany becomes the youngest female artist to have a number one album. Her iconic cover of the Tommy James and the Shondells' song I Think We're Alone Now spends two weeks at number one (and remains her biggest hit). Her debut album also produces two hit singles: Could've Been and her version of a Beatles hit, retitled I Saw Him Standing There.
Unfortunately, her second album, Hold an Old Friend's Hand, was not as successful - though it did feature my second favourite Tiffany song, Radio Romance, which 8-year-old me was obsessed with (I recall waiting anxiously for it to be played on the radio so I could record it, preferably without the DJ's interruption).
Since then, Tiffany has released several albums, each of which has showcased her range and foray into different musical genres: the urban-influenced New Inside, the rock vibe of The Color of Silence (an album which received glowing reviews, with Billboard describing it as one of the best pop albums of 2000), the dancefloor energy of Dust Off And Dance (dedicated to her gay and European fanbase) and the country album Rose Tattoo. Her 11th album, Shadows, is due to be released on 1 October and promises a rock/retro sound.
I was delighted when I saw that Tiffany would be performing at City Winery NYC as part of her North American Shadows Tour. City Winery is "designed to offer an intimate setting with unobstructed views, close to your favorite performer" and the venue lives up to its promise of making it feel as if you and the artist are in your living room. In addition, the venue also offers a superb restaurant and winery on site (wines are made with grapes from vineyards in California, Oregon and Washington).
Tiffany looked and sounded amazing (despite some issues with her mic level, which two fans were quick to point out after the opening songs) and belted out several of the songs from her new album as well as her "retro" hits, including Could've Been and, of course, I Think We're Alone Now which had the audience on their feet from the opening bars. She was joined on stage by two members of L.A. Guns, Johnny Martin and Scot Coogan, who brought the rock energy from start to finish.
