Love, Victor is set in the Love, Simon universe (the popular film released in 2018) and centers on a young and confused Victor Salazar who reaches out to Simon Spier, the closeted gay teen protagonist of the film who embarked on a quest to find out the identity of the anonymous classmate he had fallen for online. In Love, Victor, Simon becomes a confidant for Victor as he undertakes his own journey of self-discovery while also dealing with family issues.
If you are a fan of the show and are experiencing some withdrawal after the conclusion of the second season (an aside: while I like Rahim, I am definitely #TeamBenji), you should have a listen to some of the amazing songs featured in both seasons. For your convenience and listening pleasure, I have compiled a list of my top 10 favourite songs from the series (so far):
Season 1
Somebody To Tell Me - Tyler Glenn
This catchy tune is the theme song for the show and was co-written by American singer, songwriter and record producer Leland. The chorus encapsulates what Victor needs from Simon, someone who has "been there" and understands what he is going through:
Somebody to tell me it will be alright
Somebody to tell me it will be just fine
If someone has been there before
Say right now, 'cause I just need to hear it
Electricity - Silk City & Dua Lipa Featuring Diplo & Mark Ronson
From episode 2, in which Lake and Mia invite Victor to a "stoplight party" where they have to wear colours representing their individual relationship statuses. Victor's bff, Felix, tells him to wear yellow to show he likes Mia but Victor wears green instead.
Dreamland - Pet Shop Boys Featuring Years & Years
A brilliant synth-pop dance track from episode 8 where Victor heads to NYC to meet Simon in person. Simon isn't there, however, but introduces him to his friend Bran, who shows him around the city and introduces him to a gay basketball league. The song is from the scene in which Simon arrives and the group head to a bar.
God This Feels Good - Isaac Dunbar
Also featured in episode 8, titled "Boys' Trip", while the end credits roll.
Missing U - Robyn
Jillian Mapes from Pitchfork points out that Robyn's enduring appeal "lies in her ability to work out life’s loneliest moments through flailing limbs and shaking hips. It’s innate, the way she can turn her blues into redemptive gold under the dancefloor lights". So very appropriate for this episode, titled "Spring Fling", in which Victor finally acknowledges and acts on his feelings for Benji at the school dance.
Season 2
Simple Romance - COIN
The song plays in the introduction to the new season. Victor fills us in on what has happened since the end of the first season as he and Benji prepare to be a public couple at school.
No Place I'd Rather Be - Marc Baker
Featured in episode 4, which is cheekily titled "The Sex Cabin". Victor is nervous about taking his relationship with Benji to the next level and is desperate to hear Simon's thoughts but the cabin is in an area with limited cellphone reception.
Private Life - Allie X
Another fantastic pop song from the Canadian singer, songwriter and visual artist Allie X. It's the perfect backdrop for a scene in which Victor and his new-best-friend-slash-maybe-more, Rahim, sneak into a gay bar after skipping the school day.
Time After Time - Sam Smith
Sam Smith can do no wrong and his stripped down cover of Cyndi Lauper's timeless hit, recorded at Abbey Road Studios. is further evidence of his amazing talent. The song features in a montage at the end of the final episode of the season, with Victor having made up his mind about who he wants to be with.
I Want Love - Gryffin and Two Feet
A heartfelt and melodic single by future bass and dance-pop producer, Gryffin, and singer-song writer Two Feet. In the final episode, the song plays as Simon calls Victor (but he doesn't answer) and he rings the doorbell of someone's house - but we are left wondering whose.
