Years & Years : The Night Call Tour

Night Call, the highly anticipated third album from Years & Years (aka Olly Alexander), was released earlier this year.  Popmatters describes Night Call as a "sexy, fun, at-times exhilarating" album that adds a "smart, fresh update" to the synthpop era of the 80s, making it a "natural evolution from the electronic-pop past of Years & Years’ previous efforts".  This album has everything: joyful vocals, camp collaborations, synths and strings, sensuality, falsettos and good old fashioned escapism.  Indeed it has been circulating on my daily playlists since its release and never fails to put me in a good mood.

Olly announced The Night Call Tour on his Instagram:  this is your night call <mermaid emoji> join me for a moment in the stars <stars emoji> become your deepest destiny and transform your night into something spectacular <performing arts emoji> How could I turn down an invitation like that?  I grabbed the opportunity to see him at Avant Gardner, a huge venue complex comprising multiple stages and event spaces located in industrial East Williamsburg, this past Tuesday night (not ideal for someone who has to be up early for work the next day but it was a sacrifice I was willing to make).

Miya Folick was the opening act and, while she was lovely, I thought the emo rock vibe was an odd choice to get the crowd fired up for the upbeat dance-a-thon that Olly was about to deliver.  Olly took to the stage wearing a black latex trench coat which he soon shed to reveal a mesh body suit with several cutout sections and what appeared to be latex chaps.  He seemed to be having the time of his life, performing a mix of hits against a backdrop of dazzling Train Spotting-esque projections.  I was half expecting him to bring Kylie out to perform their two songs, since she was in NYC promoting the launch of her wine collection in the US.  But alas, he didn't.
