Sophie Ellis-Bextor Live in NYC

In the wake of Murder On The Dancefloor's viral moment on TikTok (thanks to that iconic scene in Saltburn), Sophie Ellis-Bextor announced that she would be going on tour AND that she would be doing a one-off show in NYC for the first time!  It's hard to believe that she hadn't performed here; she clearly has a large fanbase in the city because tickets sold out within a day.  Following the high demand for the NYC show, she shared a post announcing additional US dates: “Oh my… the New York show sold out in a day! Thank you thank you thank you...So - how about some more shows in some more cities?! San Francisco, San Diego, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and Toronto - my band and I are coming for you! Super excited. Come and dance with me".  She promised something "extra special" and boy did she deliver!

She took to the Webster Hall stage to thunderous applause and cheering, a vision in pink sequins and ostrich feathers while her band started the set wearing various animal masks (a shark, a pigeon, a poodle and a dinosaur) which they soon discarded.  Later there was a costume change, from the pink sequins number to a yellow chiffon babydoll dress complete with yellow and orange tassels dandling from bedazzled epaulettes, a perfect ensemble for all her spins and kicks.

It was clear from the outset that Sophie was thrilled to be in NYC and reiterated that the sold out NYC show was responsible for her North American tour.  She brought her "Wheel of Music" (as featured on her Kitchen Disco Instagram series during Covid lockdown), which she used to choose some of the songs she performed - although she ignored the wheel after one spin in favor of performing a cover of ABBA's Dancing Queen which the audience loved.  There were other covers throughout the set, including the opening song, Crying At The Discoteque, Lady (Hear Me Tonight), Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight) and Like A Prayer (which really had the crowd going - myself included).

Seeing her live was a dream come true; I've been a fan since Murder On The Dancefloor and her debut album were released back in 2001 and I'm so happy that her viral moment has introduced her to a whole new group of fans.
