Charli xcx and Troye Sivan created some mild hysteria when they announced that they would be joining forces for a 21 city North American tour titled "Sweat". Prices for the NYC show skyrocketed as fans (and evil scalpers) snapped up tickets, compelling us to turn to Philadelphia for more reasonably priced tickets. The tour comes at the perfect time for both artists, both of whom are currently at the top of their respective games; Charli announced her sold-out brat 2024 - Arena Tour in the UK ahead of the release of her sixth album, the club-ready brat, which went on to become something of a lime green pop culture phenomenon; even the Kamala Harris campaign joined the brat summer after Charli tweeted “kamala IS brat”, changing its X backdrop to brat green.
Meanwhile, Troye was on tour, his first in five years, promoting his hugely successful album, Something To Give Each Other, featuring the single Rush which earned him two Grammy nominations. The tour received many positive reviews with critics praising Troye for being “unapologetically queer” and highlighting the runway ready fashion and crisp choreography.
If you’re not familiar with either artist, here are my 5 favorite tracks from each to get you started:
Charli xcx
- In The City (with Sam Smith)
- Good Ones
- Apple
- Speed Drive (from Barbie The Album)
- I Love It (with Icona Pop)
Troye Sivan
- Rush
- Dance To This
- Bloom
- My My My
- One Of Your Girls
Charli and Troye have also collaborated on the nostalgic 1999 (I loved the Matrix-inspired artwork) and 2099, a sequel to 1999 released as a promotional single in 2019, both of which are two slices of pop heaven.
When promoting the tour, Live Nation described Sweat as a “testament to their commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the music industry” and promised a show “filled with exhilarating performances, stunning visuals and infectious beats”. And damn, did they deliver! The energy did not let up for the entirety of the show as Charli and Troye took turns to perform some of their hits with electrifying stage presence, while the audience, many of whom were dressed in brat green, screamed and danced. Adrian Horton from The Guardian maintains that Sweat’s “interlocking chapters unevenly paired their respective styles (languid, sensual, warm; jagged, pulsing, ecstatic) as a sort of pop victory party”. And I agree completely. It really felt like you were in the middle of a gritty and pulsating club, complete with scaffolding, cages, strobe lights and half-naked dancers. Indeed, in her Guardian review, Adrian Horton went on to point out that “the relatively lo-fi operation – a couple of onstage cameras, a catwalk, one rising platform, beats – were archetypically brat”
