Orville Peck released the first part of his third studio album, Stampede, as a digital EP titled Stampede Volume 1. The former featured collaborations with the likes of Willie Nelson (on the incredibly catchy and queer country hit, Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other, and the more pop-focused duet with Noah Cyrus, How Far Will We Take It? As much as I loved the EP, I was really hoping for a physical release. And sure enough, the full album was released on 2 August. I was excited to order the exclusive the glow-in-the-dark vinyl from Amazon, the first of its kind in my collection! Damian Morris from The Guardian points out that on this album Orville “tries as many musical hats, roaming the American songbook, searching for sympathetic styles such as gospel, MOR, chamber country and power balladry.” Let’s not forget my personal favorite, his delve into disco on the collaboration with Kylie and Diplo!
The album’s release is also being promoted with The Stampede Tour, which rolled into NYC this weekend with two shows at the gorgeous Brooklyn Paramount. The theater originally opened in 1928 as "a baroque palace of overwhelming spectacle and groundbreaking performances" and reopened in March this year after undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation. It was the perfect venue for Orville. The show was fantastic, as I knew it would be, having seen him live before, a few feet from the stage. This time the stage was up with a simple painted sunset backdrop, a series of giant spotlights that changed color throughout his set and a giant illuminated Orville Peck sign suspended from the ceiling
He took the stage (before 9PM!) in a tailored white suit, bedazzled cowboy hat and signature Lone Ranger-inspired mask (sans fringe - though the fringe made a return for the encore, with him joking that he'd slipped into something more comfortable). He soon doffed the jacket to reveal a black tank top and bulging tattooed biceps, much to the crowd’s delight.
In addition to his sultry vocals, he dazzled us with his charismatic stage presence and remarkable guitar skills. The setlist spanned his entire discography, from his debut album to a few tracks from Stampede. I won’t lie, I was a little disappointed that Kylie didn’t make a surprise appearance for a performance of Midnight Ride considering she was in New York to promote Tension II. But we did get a perfect cover of Chappell Roan’s Pink Pony Club!
