Robyn at Brooklyn Paramount

I was so excited when Robyn announced that she would be ringing in the new year with a once-off show at Brooklyn Paramount billed as “Robyn and Friends,” which included sets from Kindness, Olof Dreijer, Danny Krivit and Dee Diggs. But that excitement soon evaporated courtesy of Ticketmaster (as always).  Tickets disappeared before we even had a chance to get into the queue only for them to pop up immediately on resale sites at 3 to 10 times the original price. Why does it seem like attempts to enjoy your favorite artists are increasingly stress-filled endeavors that just end in disappointment? But all’s well that ends well as they say.  It turns out she did not come on until after 1 AM and I would not have been happy standing in a drunken crowd for 4 hours. In addition, her set was delayed because a fog machine triggered the venue’s fire alarms.

All was not lost, however. She surprised fans with the announcement of a second show at the gorgeous Brooklyn Paramount and, after an unsuccessful first attempt, we managed to secure tickets - at the original price!

Robyn took to the stage at 9:45 PM sharp (shoutout to her for actually announcing her and supporting acts’ set times on her Instagram story, unlike other artists who just keep you guessing) to rapturous applause from a packed theater.  She opened with Missing U, an appropriate choice considering how much we’ve missed her (and presumably she’s missed performing for us) in the past six years since the conclusion of her Honey Tour in 2019.

Fans were treated to a non-stop dance party that spanned her entire career: everything from a reworked version of her breakout hit Show Me Love to her latest single Dopamine and even two new tracks, Talk To Me (which I love!) and Sexistential, and everything in between. She ended the electrifying evening with Dancing On My Own, hands down one of my favorite pop songs of all time! It was thrilling to see her back on stage, looking fabulous in a sleek black catsuit with statement buckles along an asymmetrical leg design, delivering her high-energy dance moves and exuding heartfelt joy.  What a way to kick off the year!
