I have been a ride-or-die Adam Lambert fan since his American Idol days - back in 2009! Despite being the season’s runner-up (anyone remember the winner Kris Allen?) his highly dramatic, vocally flawless performances made him the definitive breakout star of his season and earned him a large following. His debut album, For Your Entertainment, earned a Grammy nomination for the single, Whataya Want From Me?
Even while forging a highly successful solo career, Adam took on one of the most monumental gigs in rock history. After a string of unforgettable joint appearances, he officially teamed up with the remaining members of Queen, stepping in as their touring frontman to deliver the band’s iconic catalog to massive crowds around the world.
His sixth studio album, ADAM, marks an amazing artistic evolution. Infusing his usual polished pop escapism with a heavier, more raw sound, the new album leans into dark '90s alt-rock and industrial textures, inspired by his life in New York City as well as a tough break-up, to deliver his most personal work yet. Personal favorites on the album are Necklace, Porcelain, Under The Rhythm (which samples the 2000 club classic Around the World (La La La La La) by the German pop group ATC) and Cloud 9.
Adam is currently performing a limited run of intimate shows to promote ADAM's release. Brooklyn Paramount was the location of his NYC show and I was over the moon to get tickets. Besides being a great venue with no real bad views, the show started exactly one hour after doors opened - no opener, no delays, no guess work involved in determining when the main act will start (a huge pet peeve of mine). Adam took to the stage wearing head-to-toe black with industrial-punk accents (his cut-off sleeves displaying his striking tattoo sleeves) and just the right amount of shimmer and sparkle, including metallic accessories.
The audience was utterly captivated from the first note until his curtain call. His impressive vocal range was on full display as he moved flawlessly from heart-wrenching, raw tracks to sleek, industrial-tinged pop bangers. I loved that he performed all of the songs from ADAM as well as some of his biggest hits, including Ghost Town from 2015's The Original High and a remixed version of If I Had You from his debut album. Another absolute standout was the genius tease of Justify My Love mashed up with Face.
