Party in the park
Party in the bush
Party under the bridge
Party at the restaurant
Party at Irving Plaza in NYC!
Following a massive arena-filling Sweat Tour with bestie Charli xcx that turned huge stadiums into high energy pop raves, the Australian singer-songwriter gave New York City fans an incredibly rare experience: a stripped-back, up-close-and-personal show at Union Square's historic Irving Plaza. He announced the surprise show via a text message to fans who’d signed up for updates on his latest album, She’s The Best and tickets went on sale that same afternoon, just two days before the show.
My pre-ordered copies of the new album arrived on the same day as the concert announcement and I could not wait to spin this record. And, no surprise, I loved it! Slick synth grooves and pulsing house beats (plus a cool Madonna sample) meet warm, natural instrumentals, giving the melodies plenty of room to soar. Lyrically, Troye moves away from pop cliches and gets surprisingly real. He explores the sweet spot between the wild highs of late-night party and hookup culture and the desire to slow down, connect and chill out with someone. My current favorite tracks are Party, Cowboy, Canada Dry and the title track, She’s The Best (which has grown on me since its release).
When we arrived shortly after doors were supposed to open (8pm), the line was wrapped around an entire block. Thankfully we were able to get inside with just minutes to spare before Troye stepped onto the stage - the venue really needs a more efficient entry system, especially for high demand events like this one. It was definitely crowded, and once again, I was glad I had my height on my side. But as soon as Troye Meets World started, all was forgotten as we were drawn into Troye’s vibrant, thrilling, queer world.
He performed most of the tracks from the new album as well as Rush and One Of Your Girls, two massive hits from his previous album. Backed by striking flashing lights and heavy, rhythmic basslines, Troye commanded the room with effortless charisma and expressive choreography. Between high-energy anthems that had the packed crowd singing every word at the top of their lungs, he kept the dialogue personal, making the electrifying energy sold-out show feel like a late-night gathering among close friends. He brought a fan onto the stage for a lap dance during One Of Your Girls and later crowd surfed during Party. It was clear that he was having a blast too.
The complete setlist was as follows:
Troye Meets World
Le Boy
Cowboy
FF
Embarrassingly
One of Your Girls
Love So Big It Hurts
Party
Rush
She’s the Best
Canada Dry (played as an outro)
